THE PLAYERS: THE PROTAGONIST,

THE CONFIDANTE and THE ANTAGONIST

In literature the Protagonist engages the reader, arousing their empathy and interest, it is the hero, the heroine. The Confidante reveals the Protagonist's thoughts, intentions and personality traits. The Antagonist is the opponent in conflict with the Protagonist. Many times there may not be much difference between the Protagonist and the Antagonist, perhaps merely circumstance.
